Great Bay Software: Intelligent IoT Visibility, Monitoring and Control

CIO VendorJim Scullion, CEO We will witness approximately 21 billion connected devices that share data with each other and across networks by 2020 according to Gartner Research. And with the Internet of Things (IoT) becoming a virtual conscience network around the world, so arises a looming crisis that's threatening organizations today: how to best ensure business-critical data remains secure. In particular, non-traditional endpoint devices connected to an organization's network—from sensors and monitoring devices to actuators—are at high risk of attacks and breaches. External threats will target these device types, as many are prevalent within highly regulated industries with access to sensitive HIPAA or PHI data and because they tend to lack robust and thorough security policies.

Enter Great Bay Software, a company leading the market in solving these endpoint security challenges head on. By enabling the real-time discovery of anomalous device activity across the network and by auto-intelligently initiating remediation tactics, Great Bay Software’s Beacon Product Suite addresses the business vulnerability of having managed and unmanaged, connected devices within a corporate network.

"We have spent the last year and a half positioning ourselves not only as network visibility and control thought leaders, but also by developing a next-gen product that truly meets the requirements of our customers"

“Being able to discover and control all devices connected to the network is a pre-requisite for any effective security strategy, and it should be top-of-mind for security leaders,” notes Jim Scullion, CEO of Great Bay Software. “This is where we are thoroughly focused as a company, and we’re seeing a positive response from the market, especially from organizations within highly regulated industries that have large quantities of non-traditional endpoint devices with high volumes of network traffic.”

Apart from minimizing device-associated risk on their networks and infrastructure, our solution also enhances other applications used by our customers because it provides real-time, data rich updates to their asset management applications

The growing business opportunity associated within the IoT security market, defined by network-device-user interaction, has emboldened the company to elevate its existing Beacon Product Suite of endpoint security solutions. Its next generation product (due out in early 2018) will expand upon feature-rich, behavior analytics capabilities and will leverage true artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to better enable information security teams to comprehensively detect, analyze and remediate potential threats across millions of endpoint devices in real-time.

An IoT Security Framework

Today, Great Bay Software’s solution consists of a software security platform that streams, aggregates and consolidates data from over forty sources, feeding it into the platform’s Warehouse of ContextTM—a processing engine built with AI capabilities—that analyzes over 150 attributes on each device and assigns a device profile type in real-time. Device profiles provide information about the activities most typical of that device group. Then the solution passively listens for any anomalous device behaviors across the network and intelligently initiates remediation policies—denying access, quarantining devices, initiating alerts, etc.—if necessary.

Great Bay Software’s platform is further enhanced by its incredible ability to scale. One customer, a large healthcare organization, is able to monitor and control over 1.5 million devices across its entire network, most of which are non-traditional endpoint devices that contain sensitive and/ or life-saving information. Another major U.S. healthcare organization considers Great Bay Software its tier zero (or mission-critical) partner and has achieved several resource efficiencies as a direct result of the platform’s user-friendly, cockpit-style dashboard, which enables the healthcare provider to understand the location of each device in real-time.
In addition, as the organization actively pursues corporate initiatives such as mergers, acquisitions and strategic partnerships, the Great Bay Software platform quickly and securely on-boards medical and other devices into the network.

Working with Early Adopters

Organizations in the healthcare, financial services, manufacturing, industrial controls and energy sectors—industries where a large volume of non-traditional endpoint devices are often lacking proper security and connected to mission-critical infrastructure—are especially vulnerable to attacks and breaches. “Companies are increasingly deploying more sensors and devices throughout plant floors, warehouses and out in the field,” explains Scullion. “Apart from minimizing device-associated risk on their networks and infrastructure, our solution also enhances other applications used by our customers because it provides real-time, data rich updates to their asset management applications.” One customer within the financial services sector is able to monitor and manage all network devices in various locations and have complete contextual knowledge of the activity each device is involved in. If any anomalous activity is detected in conjunction with device, the customer utilizes Great Bay Software’s behavior analytics feature to quickly analyze and mitigate the threat immediately.

Disrupting the market

Great Bay Software is bringing never-before-seen, product capabilities into the market, and Scullion credits much of that innovation to the company’s high-performing team, of which he describes as being highly collaborative and accountable. “We have goals and strategic plans established every year—key imperatives that will lead to our success in launching this next-gen platform,” explains Scullion. “We are backed by a strong private equity firm that supports our disruptive move deeper into the IoT security arena.”

"Being able to discover and control all devices connected to the network is a pre-requisite for any effective security strategy, and it should be top-of-mind for security leaders"

In the future, Great Bay Software’s product roadmap boasts customer portal enhancements and the ability to integrate and share data with multiple systems within a network environment. The company is deeply committed to offering a higher degree of customization for its customers by better understanding the relationships between user and device behavior on networks. “We have spent the last year and a half positioning ourselves not only as network visibility and control thought leaders, but also by developing a next-gen product that truly meets the requirements of our customers,” summarizes Scullion.
